After a while of forced, awkward conversation and a few mistrustful glances thrown here and there, the conversation at the table soon started flowing. Gavin aside, they had all spoken about their work commitments, general interests and marital statuses. Janette had been interested in Alex’s business, and he had mentioned certain events he’d photographed on purpose, knowing it would spike Janette’s interest. It was a good icebreaker, as she was soon chatting away about events she’d raced in and others she’d love to attend. She adored Scotland and the Lake District.

Ben had joked about Janette being a female Spartacus but had spent most of the time moaning about his son and winding Mark up about how electronic music was annoying, repetitive and only for drug addicts.

Alex noticed Gavin didn’t seem keen to join the conversations. He was drinking fast, and he seemed distant from the group. It was like he had nothing to add. Like he didn’t belong in the circle of friends. The rest of them had made Alex feel quite welcome, but Gavin was the odd one out, the dark cloud in the room.

‘I’ll get the drinks in,’ said Gavin.

‘Wait, my round,’ said Mark. ‘Cool, fair enough.’ He shrugged as Gavin made his way to the bar. Mark made no further attempt to stop him.

‘So, Corkscrew, you’re a producer as well, you say?’ said Ben.

‘Yes, though I doubt I’ve produced much that you’d listen to, mate,’ said Mark. ‘I bet you like country and western, don’t you?’

‘Yeah, I do a bit. But I’m more of an Andy Williams guy.’

‘You should come along to a venue, Ben. You could even wear your cowboy hat if you wanted,’ said Mark, sharing a secret grin with Janette.

Ben shook his head. ‘All that whomp thump stuff would give me a headache. No offence, mate.’

‘Loads taken,’ said Mark, tugging on his vape and filling their corner with smoke.

‘You can’t smoke that smelly crap in here,’ complained Ben, wafting his hands about.

‘It’s alright. It’s only opium,’ said Mark.

‘Best pass it around, then,’ said Janette with a crooked grin.

Gavin soon arrived with several beers, a chardonnay and five shots that looked like pink mouthwash. He handed the drinks out.

Ben sniffed his pint. ‘Is this one of the local ales?’

‘Sheep shagger’s scrotum or something like that,’ said Gavin.

‘Yeah, smashing, one of my favourites,’ he said, gulping the drink.

Alex pushed the shot aside. ‘Not for me, thanks. I need to drive.’

‘Get a taxi,’ said Gavin.

‘Yeah, we’ll get a taxi, Alex; you’ve already had too many,’ Mark pointed out.

Alex studied the pink liquid that seemed to glow. ‘What is it?’

‘Poison,’ said Gavin, with no humour in his voice.

‘Well, in that case,’ said Alex. And hit back the drink whilst keeping his focus on Gavin.

Alex knew this would be a long night.
